CUSTOM HEAT TREATMENT OF ANNEALED STEEL HAND GUARD CAPS
Hand guards on firearms enable the weapon to be gripped from the front because they afford the user protection from the barrel, which can become quite hot during firing. At Bristol Heat Treat, we were asked by a military customer to harden and temper end caps for hand guards to enable them to better resist the intense heat generated by the firearm. Guided by our customer’s specifications, we used our heat treatment skills to harden and temper the annealed C1050 carbon steel end caps to 15N 79.5-81.5 in our continuous belt furnaces. Integrity of the 1” to 2” long, 1” to 2” wide, and ½” high caps was then confirmed using Rockwell hardness testing and temper testing. Hardening and tempering two to four barrels at a time, we were able to sufficiently treat 300 to 600 lbs. of the end caps in only three to five days for delivery.
